There is an appealing background to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just across the dividing line from nearby Thailand, in which casino gambling is banned. Eight gambling dens are established in a generally small space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect destination, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal income acquired from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a few controls constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; although, investment sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 1700, and despite the fact visas are apparently needed to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is real of many border crossings.
The original Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only 1 casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored boat gambling den, contains 150 one armed bandits and 60 table games. The Naga river boat is open all day and night with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of 21, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. There are 150 slot machines and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slots and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and 66 of the normal gaming tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a comprehensive resort and hotel building that features many conveniences in addition to the gambling hall, which contains ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machines and eighty eight tables.
