There is a fascinating history to the Cambodia gambling dens that reside just across the border from neighboring Thailand, where gambling den wagering is against the law. Eight casinos are based in a relatively tiny location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent area, a three to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million, and there are a number of limitations constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mainly Thai; however, financing sources are cryptic. The borders are ceremoniously open from 09:00 to 5:00 p.m., and despite the fact visas are apparently required to cross, there are means around this, as is correct of most borders.
The initial Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored barge gambling den, contains 150 one armed bandits and 60 table games. The Naga gambling den is open 24 hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly opened. A total of 150 slot machine games and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slot machine games and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and sixty six of the familiar gaming tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the 8 casinos in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-around vacation and hotel complex that features numerous comforts aside from the casino, which has 10,000 square feet of 130 one armed bandits and eighty eight tables.
