There is a fascinating history to the Cambodia casinos that lie just over the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, in which casino gaming is not legal. Eight casinos are situated in a relatively tiny area in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling dens is in an excellent location, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the casinos ranges from 7.5 million dollars to more than 12.5 million, and there are a couple of limitations constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is required to be largely Thai; still, funding sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 1700, and though visas are supposedly required to cross, there are means around this, as is correct of many border crossings.

The 1st Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga gambling hall never closes with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of vingt-et-un, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The first casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly followed. A total of 150 slot machine games and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 slot machines and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and ninety six table games, including 87 punto banco (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and sixty six of the familiar table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive vacation and hotel compound that contains a number of conveniences in addition to the casino, which provides ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and eighty eight gaming tables.
