There is a fascinating story to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just over the border from next door Thailand, where gambling hall betting is illegal. Eight casinos are based in a generally small area in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent destination, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai laborers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The astonishing income gained from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to more than 12.5 million, and there are a number of limitations constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is required to be mainly Thai; although, financial sources are ambiguous. The borders are ceremoniously open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and even though visas are supposedly needed to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is true of many borders.
The original Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored boat gambling den, features 150 one armed bandits and 60 tables. The Naga gambling hall is open 24 hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are one hundred and fifty slot machine games and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slot machines and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and 66 of the normal tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, again a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational resort and hotel complex that contains a number of luxuries in addition to the casino, which houses 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and eighty eight tables.
