There is a captivating background to the Cambodia casinos that sit just over the border from neighboring Thailand, where casino wagering is banned. Eight gambling dens are based in a relatively small space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect spot, a three to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The astonishing capital gained from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million, and there are a few limitations constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; still, funding sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and though visas are supposedly required to cross, there are ways around this, as is true of most borders.
The 1st Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary ship casino, contains 150 slot machines and sixty gaming tables. The Naga river boat never closes with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon followed. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slot machines and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slots and sixty six of the normal tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the 8 casinos in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a multinational resort and hotel complex that contains many luxuries accompanying the casino, which offers 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slots and 88 tables.
