There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just over the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where casino gaming is not permitted. Eight gambling dens are established in a generally tiny area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent area, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The astonishing capital accrued from the gambling halls ranges from 7.5 million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a few controls constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; although, funding sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 17:00, and even though visas are supposedly needed to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is correct of many border crossings.
The initial Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked ship gambling den, highlights one hundred and fifty slot machines and 60 gaming tables. The Naga gambling den is open all hours with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, four tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon opened. A total of one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slots and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and sixty six of the common gaming tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight casinos in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational vacation and hotel compound that features a number of amenities aside from the gambling hall, which houses 10,000 square feet of 130 one armed bandits and eighty eight tables.
